Continuity of the Earthing System Test

video transcription - continuity of the earthing system test

Husnen Rupani:
Hi, I’m Hus. In this video, we’ll talk about the continuity of earthing system based on close 8.3.5 of AS3000. The purpose of testing the continuity of earthing system is to ensure that in case of an earth fault, the circuit protection devices will operate. Also, in case of an earth fault, we want to ensure that the voltages of the exposed parts don’t go above dangerous levels. Just a disclaimer, I’m not an electrician, but I’m being coached by one who has 30 years of experience in the industry, as well as as a trainer and assessor. Now I’ll conduct a continuity of earthing system test on our main earthing conductor, equally potential bonded part and on socket outlet tool. I will use this IR tester’s low Ohms scale to measure the earth resistance. I’ll start by testing my tester.

So I’m getting 0 ohms and my tester is working. I will hook up one side of my tester, one of the leads to the earth, and I will test that connection, and I’m getting 0.1, just over 0.1 ohms. Now I’ll do a test on the bonded parts, and I’m getting about 0.2, just under 0.2 ohms. And finally, we’ll do a test on the socket outlet two, and we’re getting 0.3 ohms. We found that the resistance of the main earth in conductor was about 0.1 ohms. Resists of the quick potential bonded part was about 0.2 ohms, and both of them are no more than 0.5 ohms based on a closed 8.3.5 of AS3000. So that’s a pass. And the resistance of the earthing conductor of the socket outlet two was about 0.3 ohms. And based on table 8.2, that’s also a pass.

Now we’ve added some faults to the system, so we’ll repeat those three tests and see whether they pass or fail. So first we’ll start by testing our tester on 3 ohm scale, and that’s still zero. Let’s go to our main earthing conductor. So at 3 ohm scale, main earthing conductor is showing more than three ohms. So let’s change our scale to 500 ohms and check the tester again. Still zero. Let’s check the main earthing conductor and we’re seeing about 8 or 9 ohms. So that’s a fail. Let’s do the test on our equip potential bonded path. And we’re still on 500 ohms scale that’s showing quite close to 0. Let’s change our range to three ohms scale, test our tester.

Okay. Let’s do the bonded part test again, and we’re seeing the resistance of close to 0.2 ohms. So that’s a pass. Now let’s do our test on the socket outlet two earthing conductor. On 3 ohms scale, we’re seeing that the resistance might be more than 3 ohms. Let’s change that to 500 ohms. Test our tester and still 0. And I’m getting the resistance of 15 ohms, so that’s also a fail. If you found this video useful, please feel free to use it in your classes and share it with your colleagues.
