INSTALLATION FAULTS PRACBOX - VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Husnen Rupani:
If you are an electrical contractor or responsible for health and safety of your electricians and apprentices, then the Installation Faults Pracbox can help you.
Hi, I’m Hus. If you have electricians or electrical apprentices on your team, one of the things you would have to do for the health and safety is to help them practice Mandatory Testing and Safe Isolation Procedure, and that’s exactly what the Installation Faults Pracbox can help you with. Let me show you the Installation Faults Pracbox and walk you through what it can do for you.
Here is the Installation Faults Pracbox. We also call it the IF Pracbox. There are two parts to the IF Pracbox. One of them allows you to do the Mandatory Testing practice and the other one, Safe Isolation Procedure practice. As you can tell, there is a small installation in this box. Here’s the main switch. There are two power circuits and one lighting circuit. Here’s your main earth electrode, and here’s your bonded part. On the top right-hand corner of the box, you have a selection of Fault mode or Isolation mode. If you are in Fault mode, you can do Mandatory Testing practice, and if you are in Isolation mode, you can do Safe Isolation Procedure practice. Let’s now look at both modes in more detail.
The Faults System Dive Pracbox allows you to have 31 fault sets, and they’re all a combination. So some fault sets might only have one fault, some might have two, some might have three. So it gives you a good combination and good variety of faults. The IF Pracbox will allow you to do the majority of Mandatory Testing, like continuity of earthing system, insulation resistance test, polarity, correct circuit connections, verification of earth fault of impedance. The only one it won’t allow you to do is verification of RCD because you don’t have low voltage in this box.
Let me show you how to activate the faults. When this toggle switch is in Fault mode, you can activate faults with the switches on the side of this box. So if I turn on the different combination of switches, it activates different faults, and we can see the fault set here. So the people that are using the box, they won’t know what the faults are, but we will give you this document, the Fault Mapping Guide, which will tell you exactly what faults are there. So the supervisor can know the results, but the person that is doing the test, they won’t know the results, and then they can go through the whole procedure and come to you for checking their answers. Let’s now look at the Safe Isolation side of the IF Pracbox.
The other part of the IF Pracbox, which is the Safe Isolation Procedure practice, would allow us to put extra-low voltage in this installation and then identify the circuit that we want to turn off, isolate it, then test it to prove that it is isolated. So let’s have a look at that.
Right now the box is in Fault mode and you can see that the fault set nine is active. If I want it to be in Isolation mode, all I have to do turn the Isolation mode on. Now, when I do that, all the faults get cleared. That way if there is a short circuit fault somewhere and you power up the installation, there is no chance of that damaging the circuit or the installation itself. But what that Isolation mode allows us to do is activate this power supply. Now, there is a toggle switch here to turn it off and on. Let’s start by measuring the voltage on that so I can show you what we get out of it.
Right now while the toggle switch is off, I can see that I have no volt, and if I turn that on, I’m seeing 31 volts, which is extra-low voltage. Now I’m going to wire the circuit so the whole installation gets power. With this setup, we should have power in the whole installation, but with the main switch off, the power should only be at the entry. So let’s start by testing what voltage we get there.
So we can see that at the main switch we are getting 31 volts, which was our supply voltage. But on the other side of the main switch, while it’s turned off, we have no voltage here. So let’s turn the whole installation on and then check the voltages on the final sub-circuits. While I have my socket outlet adapter on this socket outlet, let’s measure the output on this one. And I’m seeing 31 volts here. So if I turn that off, the voltage should disappear, which it does. So I know that my system now is live.
As you saw, the Installation Faults Pracbox will allow you to provide your electricians and electrical apprentices with a safe and portable setup for the Mandatory Testing and Safe Isolation Practice.
