Soft Starter – Motor Starter Pracbox Demonstration Video

motor starter pracbox demo part 1 - video transcription

Hus:
In this video, I will demonstrate the prototype of our upcoming product with VSD and soft starter. Let’s get started.

Hi, I’m Hus. In this video, we’ll look at the demonstration of our upcoming product Motor Starter Pracbox that’s designed to satisfy the requirements for VSD, soft starter and braking for the EL0005. We’ll do this video in three parts. In the first part, we’ll look at the soft starter, VSD and braking demonstration. In the second part, we’ll look at the safety aspects that we’ve considered when designing this product, and in the third part, we’ll look at the upcoming changes for this product because there’s still a prototype.

Let’s first look at what we’ve included in the Motor Starter Pracbox. As you can see in the top left-hand corner, we have our VSD. We have a 24 volt AC contactor. We have a soft starter. We have some push buttons and an extra low voltage three-phase motor. The VSD is ABB’s ACS180, which is an AC drive. It controls the speed of the motor by changing the frequency. On the left side, you can see all these terminals for the VSD. These are all I/O terminals for the VSD. On the right side of the VSD, we have these three terminals, which are your line outputs.

So UV and W. and the way we’ve designed, the way we’ve wired this VSD, we’ve actually also got a neutral terminal. Usually in VSDs you don’t have neutral, but here we have. One of the most convenient things about the M otor Starter Pracbox is that it operates on 230 volts from a standard socket output. So 230 volts comes in and the VSD gives you three-phase extra low voltage output. We also have a DC power supply here that we’ll use for braking. Let’s now look at the demonstration of the soft starter.

The soft starter that we’re using here is a Schneider Altistart. Let’s look at the data sheet first so we can then look at how we need to connect the circuit. This is how Schneider recommends that we connect the circuit. Now, rather than using every component that we have here, we’ll just select a few components. So the ones that we will use are going to be our contactor, our stop push button, start push button, Altistart, and the three-phase motor. For the supply, we will use the output of the VSD as our supply. You can always use an external three-phase ELV power supply, but the way we’ve designed the VSD output is so you can use it internally as well, so you don’t need to rely on external power supplies. Let’s connect the circuit.

We’ve now created a stop-start circuit. Let’s test the circuit before we go any further. So, as I mentioned, I’m going to use the power supply of the VSD or the output of the VSD as our power supply. At the moment, I’ve only connected it from the U terminal and the neutral, which gives me 24 volts. So let’s test it so we can see how the contactor pulls in, and then disconnects or disengages. So we know that our stop-start circuit works. Let’s continue building our circuit. So far we’ve already connected our stop, our start, our hold-in, and the coil of the contactor. Now we’ll wire the control terminals of the stop-starter.

Okay, now we wired these control terminals of the soft starter as well. Now we’ll wire our power coming from the VSD output through the contactor contacts, through the soft-starter, and then to the three-phase ELB motor. Now we have wired our contactor, so all the power lines going through the contactors contacts through to the soft starter, going to the three-phase ELB motor. Now, since I’m using my VSD as my power supply, I’m going to turn that on. The power is going from the VSD output to the contactors contact, but since that’s not energized, it’s not going to the soft starter or the motor. So as soon as I turn that on, we can see that the soft starter turns on, but it hasn’t reached the full voltage yet, but now it’s reached the full voltage. So there is that delay, which is what you would expect from a soft starter. If I turn it off, it disengages instantly because the contactor is disengaged. We just saw a demonstration of the soft starter circuit as recommended by the data sheet. Let’s now look at a VSD circuit.
